How Is Suspence Created In The Film.

Arlington Road (1999)

By watching the first few minutes of the film Alington Road; which was the title sequence, i established that it was a thriller movie through the Sounds, Camera, Mise en scene and Editing.

The film opens with images of a white gate on a black background, a suburban village which could be of Alington Road, a town in America which shows normality. It was quite difficult to make out the images as they are in inverted colours and also the images only stayed on the screne for a matter of seconds. Some images stood out clearly form the rest, such as the fences and the front yard of the house, which protrays safety and it could also imply that it could be a deserted area.
The colour red is then shown within the image, hinting 'bloody' images.

Amongst this, the title sequence also shows images of young girls in white dresses, protraying danger with the innocent.

The director has used different effects such as the negative effect, which could be referred to danger within the film. Establishing shot are used to show the audience what the setting is and what the film is related to. The non-diegetic sound in the background is of a dramatic genre indicating it will be a thriller film. The editing of the film is a rythmic cut, matching the music. The fast pace montage gives it the thrilling feel, with the non-diegetic creepy sound playing over it, with a added unrecognisable voice.

The use of the hand held camera contributes to the unsafe atmoshere of the surbueban area. the titles are abstract and blurred which works well with the red vivid colour injected in the images.
This leaves the audience wanting more, and also they want to see what happens next.
