Photo 'words' Activity

This photo depicts the word 'City', this image has been taken as it shows a clear path looking down at people walking. The fact that there are people walking in straight towards and away from the camera emphasises the structure of cit life. The modern buildings caught in the sides of the image allow us to realise the technology within the city of London the image also seems almost square like as it focuses on the square almost boring life the city forces upon its inhabitants.

This image describes in some ways the word ' Anguish' as we can see there is alot of darkness in the picture which shows the negative side to the image, the fact that in the distance we can see light showing contrast between both makes it look unreachable. The light and the darkness is symbolic to emotions as happiness is out of reach when in the darkness, this is a prime factor when one is in anguish.
Here the image is quite straight forward, we can see 'Happiness' almost everywhere most evidently in Rojda Dere shown in the image jumping in joy as she has taken a leap of happiness, the scenario is also captivating as it is very bright and the is green grass which shows the beauty of life all focusing on happiness.

This image is very cramped and negative looking therefore can fit into the word 'claustrophobic'. The tilt also adds a sense of emotional dispair or confusion.

List of Thriller Sub-Generes

There are various types of thriller genres as not all thrillers follow the same pattern some with some sub genres even leaning towards comedy there is a clear difference between thriller ,

*Conspiracy Thriller
*Crime Thriller
*Political Thriller
*Futuristic Thriller
*Mystery/Drama
*Sci-fi Thriller
*Forensic Thriller
*Religious Thriller
*Suspense Thriller.

The film Angels and Demons fits directly under conspiracy thriller, there are various scenes in the film with altered suspense making it enthralling to the audience, there is a clear conspiracy in the film connecting to the illuminati and secret societies. The thriller can also easily fit into other genres as there are various murders and mysteries yet the conspiracy is the focal point of the film.

A prime example of a Forensic Thriller would be Taken, throughout the film there is an increasing amount of suspense as a young girl is kidnapped and as the girls father played by Liam Neelson rapidly uses his CIA skills to uncovor the location of his daughter.

Sci-Fi thrillers are commonly associated with aliens as with the film 'Alien'.

How Is Suspence Created In The Film.

Arlington Road (1999)

By watching the first few minutes of the film Alington Road; which was the title sequence, i established that it was a thriller movie through the Sounds, Camera, Mise en scene and Editing.

The film opens with images of a white gate on a black background, a suburban village which could be of Alington Road, a town in America which shows normality. It was quite difficult to make out the images as they are in inverted colours and also the images only stayed on the screne for a matter of seconds. Some images stood out clearly form the rest, such as the fences and the front yard of the house, which protrays safety and it could also imply that it could be a deserted area.
The colour red is then shown within the image, hinting 'bloody' images.

Amongst this, the title sequence also shows images of young girls in white dresses, protraying danger with the innocent.

The director has used different effects such as the negative effect, which could be referred to danger within the film. Establishing shot are used to show the audience what the setting is and what the film is related to. The non-diegetic sound in the background is of a dramatic genre indicating it will be a thriller film. The editing of the film is a rythmic cut, matching the music. The fast pace montage gives it the thrilling feel, with the non-diegetic creepy sound playing over it, with a added unrecognisable voice.

The use of the hand held camera contributes to the unsafe atmoshere of the surbueban area. the titles are abstract and blurred which works well with the red vivid colour injected in the images.
This leaves the audience wanting more, and also they want to see what happens next.

Definition Of Suspence

Suspence

Suspence is a feeling of uncertainty and anxiety about the outcome of certain actons, most often referring to an audience's perception is a dramatic work.

Halloween is a classic example using a title sequence to lure and capture the audience's interest to watch the film.

The title sequence starts of with a pitch black screen this helps to build up tension and suspense. We then see the first image of the title which is orange/red text on the black background; because it is a black background the text stands out more. This is used to create tention as it clearly shouts out danger, each text is only shown on the screen for a couple of seconds and then dissolves back into the black screen.

The style of the font is very distinct and bold capturing the audience's attention whilst disappering. the only image used within the sequence is a glowing pumpkin, which clearly defines that the film is about Halloween. The pumpkin also builds up tension within the sequence, as it gets bigger (slowly comes towards the audience.) The pumpkin flickers in and out with the music. This emphasises the Halloween theme of the film and set the scene for the rest of the fim.

The text is shown in Orange which slowly changes into Red to portray the type of genre of the film. Red is normally associated with danger and so added with the title of the film 'Halloween.'

The font size varies depending on what is being said, for example the actors name is in a larger font, and the character they are playing is in a smaller font, this emphasises the actor. A good exaple of this is 'Introducing JAMES LEE COURTIS as laurin'.

At the beginning of the sequence, the production company 'Compass International' slowly moves to the director of the film which is 'John Carpenter' and then to the actors that star in the film.

By doing this already the audience is established to the actors and are visualizing what type of character they would be playing in the film, from their previous movie roles.

Overall i think that the title sequence is very successful as it manages to build up tention throught the sequence.

Livetype and Sound

Live Type is a similar software to final cut pro as the difference is that live type is specialised in creating
title credits. The similarities between live type and final cut pro are the functions of the programs as they both have a time liner which is used in order to rearrange the sequence. The main purpose of final cut pro is to edit footage and the purpose for live type is to create titles and credit. Although they are both used for different purposes, they have a link as the produced credits are placed onto the edited footage.

The advantage of using live type is that it gives us a wide range of fonts and effects suitable for each genre to choose from. This then gives us a better chance in order to create suitable credits for the chosen genre of our thrillers.

Sound track is software which is also quite similar to final cut pro and live type as this is a triplet that is combined together to make one final piece. Yet again soundtrack also has a time liner which is used for the same purpose. The functions are also similar to final cut pro and live type as the 3 software’s are produced to work well when combined.

Equipment and Health and Safety

Introduction to Equipment and Health and Safety

The introduction of the video cameras exposed us to all of the functions and features within the machine. In the tutorial we where taught the basics such as opening the lens, switching the camera on/off. As well as these basics we also learnt how to focus into areas, switching between memory cards, zooming in/ out, inserting the batteries etc. The main objective of this tutorial was to learn how to handle the equipment with out causing any damageto it. Each members of the group had a chance in order to try out the basic steps of using the camera.

We where also taught how to set up the tripod and place the camera accurately as this may have had an effect on the footage recorded. We where also given advice on how to handle the equipment on different weather conditions such as carrying an umbrella if needed and only filming if the weather was appropriate in order not to cause any damage to the equipment.

This basic tutorial of the cameras gave us a better understanding of the camera work and the features that was available to use. The basic talk about the health and safety for both us students and the equipment while out of the college premises clearly stated out what was not suppose to be done while using the equipment.
